Varying fruit, vegetable prices hit common man

The failure of the concerned authorities to keep a check on varying prices of vegetables and fruits in different markets of Jammu City has added to the miseries of the common man, who seems to be already burdened by the soaring prices of essential commodities.

The prices of fruits and vegetables in the main mandis of the city, like Mahesh Pura, BC Road near Bus Stand, Janipur, Muthi in city outskirts, and some others vary as the vendors charge as per their will.

“I bought tomatoes and lady finger from BC Road mandi at Rs 20 per kg and Rs 60 per kg respectively, but when I reached Mahesh Pura mandi, the rates were different,” said Vijay Kumar, a local, adding, “Not only this, the rates of fruits were also different at both the mandis.”

It has also been noticed that rates of vegetables and the fruits also keep on varying as the day progresses. “The rates of fruits and vegetables remain different during the day. At morning, the rates are high, and as the day progresses, they keep on varying as per the wish of the vendor,” another consumer, Shanker said.

“In the evening, the rates are almost half as compared to morning, which is very strange,” he said and demanded that the concerned authorities should take steps to keep a check on varying rates.
