Only one out of every 100 gets convicted in narcotics related crimes in Jammu and Kashmir, the state government on Wednesday said.
This was stated by the minister for Home while replying to a calling attention notice given by MLC Surinder Choudhary in Legislative Council.
In its written reply the government said only 12 out of 1061 prosecuted persons in narcotic related crimes were convicted during the year 2014 and 2015.
The government reply reveals that 400 cases were registered in connection with the sale of various types of Narcotics in the state during the year 2014 while as in 2015 the number of registered cases was 540.
The government figures reveal the increase in the narcotics related activities in Jammu and Kashmir.
As per the government figures, 504 persons were prosecuted for their involvement in Narcotics while as the number of prosecuted persons in 2015 was 557. However, only six persons in each year have been convicted by the government during the years 2014 and 2015.
In its reply the government said 355 cases were challaned in the year 2014 and 393 were challaned in 2015.
"1288 persons including 533 in 2014 and 755 in 2015 were arrested for their connection with Narcotics," reads the written reply.
The government however said the JK state has enacted legislation – The Jammu and Kashmir Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1988 – for effective prevention of illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.
