10 cops among 21 injured in Pulwama clashes
At least twenty persons, including ten policemen, were injured in the clashes which erupted in this south Kashmir town after locals alleged that force personnel brought down some flags, banners at Martyr's graveyard in Karimabad area.
Witnesses said the locals of Karimabad had erected some banners and flags to remember slain militants at martyr's graveyard. "However some force personnel brought down the banners," they added.
As the word about the incident spread locals took to streets and protested against the pulling down of banners.
The protesters blocked Pulwama -Nawgam road and protested there. They also offered the Friday congregational prayers on the road, witnesses said.
"This is the second time when the forces have desecrated martyr's graveyard in Karimabad. They are hell bent to destroy the graveyard here," some locals said.
As the protests were on, the forces reached the spot disperse the protesters. But the protesters pelted stones on them. Forces retaliated with teargas shells and also fired some rounds of bullets in air.
When contacted the SSP Pulwama Rayees Muhammad Bhat said, "We don't know who has brought the banners down. Karimabad people should have contacted police instead of throwing stones."
