Under Swachh Bharat Mission and Swachhta Hi Sewa, 2018 theme a special cleanliness and sanitation drive was held in Leh town. The 2-week long drive which concluded here on Sunday was jointly conducted by Municipal Committee, Leh, LEDeG and ALTOA.
Additional deputy commissioner Leh Moses Kunzang was the chief guest on the occasion.
On the occasion, an eco-friendly reusable and recyclable carry bag was launched as an alternative to polythene and plastic base carry bags. A de-slugging motor vehicle was also launched by MC, Leh in collaboration with LEDeG and ALTOA.
Addressing the gathering, the ADC Moses Kunzang said that administration and council alone cannot address all the problems and stressed on the need for collaborative effort by everyone including NGOs, social and private organization and individuals to achieve success in causes like cleanliness.
He highlighted the initiatives and efforts undertaken taken by the council to redress the issues of waste management, water scarcity, traffic management, etc.
Ex. Dir. LEDeG Dr. Norden Otzer informed people about the ill effects of plastics and their usage not only for environment but more than that for health concerns. He also shared the facts about contamination of underground water by sanitary waste, water shortage and stressed on the use of traditional local toilets. He urged everyone to come together to address issues like cleanliness and water management rather than blaming government accountable for everything.
