16 more youths detained in South Kashmir

More than a dozen youths were detained by forces during fresh raids in Pulwama and Awantipora areas on Saturday, a source said.

The source said the police continued to carry out raids in several localities last night and detained 16 youths. Earlier, the police had detained 13 youths.

   

“Forces raided Rahmoo, Awantipora, Kakapora and other villages and picked up 16 youths in connection with the Lethpora attack,” the source said.

As per locals, soon after the Lethpora attack, forces barged into the residences of families, relatives and friends of several militants.

“During that night, the forces not only detained youths but thrashed family members of militants and ransacked their houses,” local residents said.

Residents in several southern areas said that repeated nocturnal raids by government forces have forced scores of youth to go into hiding.

A resident of Rahmoo, Pulwama, said forces raided several houses in his village and detained more than a dozen youth.

“These night-time raids are horrifying,” he said.

In ChurithDevsar area of southern Kulgam district, locals said that forces barged into their homes and beat up people during night.

“The forces apart from thrashing people ransacked residential houses and parked vehicles,” they said.

“These youth were detained for questioning in connection with the attack on CRPF convoy in Lethpora,” said an official who wished not to be named.
