Two labourers lost their life and another was seriously injured when they fell from a hillock while extracting gypsum from a quarry in Bijhama area of Baramulla district Wednesday morning, a police official said.
"We have registered a case and started our investigation. The labourers were extracting gypsum from the quarry at the time of incident," said Imtiyaz Hussain, SSP Baramulla.
Those killed were identified as Muhammad Afzal and Sajad Ahmad.
Locals said that at the time of incident, one of the labourers lost his control and as he was about to fall down, other two while trying to hold him also lost control and fell.
As the news of the incident spread in the area, hundreds of people rushed to the spot and held demonstrations. The locals alleged that gypsum quarries operating in the area don't have safety standards and neither are adhering to rules for safety of labourers.
The protesters while accusing the administration of spoiling the environment here said that pollution level in the area has increased manifold because of the dust emanating from the quarries.
