2 militants, 9 OGWs arrested in Sopore: Police

Police on Tuesday claimed to have busted Hizb and JeM militants module by arresting two militants and nine over ground workers in main town here.  

Addressing a press conference, SSP Sopore, Harmeet Singh Mehta, said on specific information regarding presence of militants in Watlab area of Sopore, a cordon and search operation was launched by police along with Marcos, CRPF and 22 RR on 7 January at 10 pm. 

   

“During search operation, we arrested two active militants identified as Mushtaq Ahmad Chopan @ Haroon son of Ghulam Muhammad of Wagad Tral and Shija-u-din Sheikh son of Ghulam Mohi-u-din of Dadsara Tral. Both the militants were hiding near a school at Watlab Sopore, but during a cordon the duo tried to open fire on forces, but they were overpowered and arrested,” the SSP said.  

“Other OGWs workers acting as conduits of these militants were motivated to join the militants ranks. They were identified as Irshad Ahmad Lone of Seer Tral, Humaiz of Kupwara, Tajamul Islam of Dangarpora Sopore, Syed Tamiz-u -din of Dangarpora Sopore, Ghulam Nabi Mir of Iqbal Nagar Sopore, Mudasir Ahmad Mir of Iqbal Nagar, Saleem Ahmad Beigh of Sheikh Sahib Sopore, Muzamil Ahmad Ganaie of Sheikh Sahib Sopore and  Showkat Ahmad Kaboo of Arampora Sopore,” he said.  

“During the course of investigation, these militants motivated youth to join militant ranks.  The militants are from south kashmir and they had come to north Kashmir to recruit local youth to join militant ranks. The militants of JeM and Hizb are working together for these recruits and have contacts with the south Kashmir militants @ Reyaz Naikoo and Hamaad of Hizb and Ali and Qasim of JeM,” the SSP said.  

He said arms and ammunition recovered from these militants include one Ak 47 rifle, Ak magazine and two hand grenades. “We also recovered from their possession incriminating documents. Mobile phones have been recovered from the conduits. An FIR no 10/2018 u/s 07/25 has been registered in this regard and further investigation is going on,” the SSP said.
