A 14-year-old girl died while her elder sister was rescued after the duo jumped into a stream in Kulangam area of Handwara in Kupwara district on Thursday.
Locals who spotted them jumping inside the water body immediately swung into action and in the meantime, police party reached the spot.
The police team and local volunteers retrieved both the sisters and took them to a nearby hospital where one of them was declared brought dead.
The condition of another is stated to be critical, reports said.
When contacted, SDPO Handwara, Shabir Ahmad Khan said: “It is apparent that the duo committed suicide a case has been registered to ascertain the cause of the incident.”
