20 Amarnath pilgrims injured in road accident

At least 20 Amarnath pilgrims were injured in a road accident in southern Kashmir's Anantnag district on Saturday.

An official said two buses, ferrying pilgrims, rammed intoeach other on old Srinagar-Jammu National Highway in Hernag near railwaystation here, leaving 20 pilgrims injured.

While 18 of them sustained minor injuries two other wereevacuated to the hospital for treatment, with serious injuries.

An eyewitness said soon after the accident locals from thearea rushed to the spot to help the injured pilgrims.

A police official confirmed the accident and said that allthe injured pilgrims belong to Rajasthan. "A few of them are undergoingtreatment at Anantnag hospital," he said.

The 45-day annual pilgrimage which started on July 1 willend on August 15. There are two routes to reach the cave shrine – Sonmarg orBaltal route in central Kashmir and Pahalgam route in southern Kashmir.

The state administration has put in place elaborate securityarrangements for smooth conduct of the Yatra.
