Kupwara, Nov 9: Wildlife authorities on Saturday killed another man-eater leopard at Magam area in Handwara here.
Officials said the leopard was declared a man-eater by the Wildlife Department after it killed two children—Faheem Rashid (7) son of Abdul Rashid and Nazia (5) daughter of Abdul Rashid Tantray at Bumdugar Magam.
The department had formed several teams to kill the leopard with the help of local hunters. "After the leopard was spotted near Bum-Dugar pond we rushed to the spot and killed the man-eater with the help of a local hunter Abdul Aziz Khan," said incharge Wildlife department (Handwara), Habib-ullah.
He said the postmortem of the leopard was performed at Sopore hospital. "It weighed around 70 Kgs with had broken canines and paws" he said. Meanwhile, people of the area heaved a sigh of relief following the killing of the leopard.
"We are thankful to Minister of Forests Mian Altaf Ahmad and wildlife officers for coming to our rescue," Ghulam Ahmad of Magam Handwara. At least five children were killed in the district during past one month. Few days ago, the Wildlife officials had killed a man eater leopard at Sodal Handwara.
