The Centre is mulling handing over some of the cases of Masarat Alam in which he has been booked under UAPA to National Investigation Agency.

Sources said Home Ministry officials discussed future course of action and a suggestion was made to handover some of the cases, where Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) had been slapped on Alam, to NIA.

Out of the 27 cases registered against 44-year-old Alam, eight cases have been registered under various provisions of UAPA which carry a sentence of death or life term.

All these cases are under investigation, the sources said, adding the state Home Department has been asked to give details of what has changed between September 24 last year and now that the authorities decided not to invoke a fresh Public Safety Act (PSA).
