Srinagar, Nov 9: The SSM College of Engineering and Technology at Parihaspora has come under severe criticism of students for allegedly "fleecing them by charging extra payment on aprons and syllabus copies of different courses."
A delegation of students on Friday told Greater Kashmir that the college was charging them Rs 1500 on an apron which otherwise costs Rs 700 in the market. "It is absolutely monarchical. For a piece of apron they charge us more than a thousand while as the same is available in the market at just few hundreds," the delegation said.
The delegation said: "A syllabus copy and job sheet which would hardly cost Rs 50 in the market is sold to the students at Rs 200. We are suffering at the decision taken by the college authorities and there is no one to check this thing."
Asked why the students were not complaining to the college authorities directly, the delegation gave a bizarre answer: "If we complain to the college authorities, they give us less marks in our examinations."
When contacted, Chairperson SSM College Dilafroz Qazi said aprons, syllabus copies and job sheets are being given to students at fair prices. "The cost of the equipments necessary for engineering at SSM is far less than the other colleges in Jammu and elsewhere. It is like free education at our college," she said.
However, Admission Officer SSM College Masood Ahmad said the College charges just Rs 500 per apron besides identity card, syllabus copy and job sheet. "The college charges just Rs 1000 per year as registration fee per student. So where from does the point of charging Rs 1500 per apron comes," he said.
