A Sufi Peer Afzal Fazili passed away Saturday evening after a brief illness at Gamoora in north Kashmir's Bandipora district.
He was 103.
The Nimaaz-e-Jinaaza of the deceased was offered at 9:30 am today at Eid Gah Gamoora, which was attended by thousands of people from all walks of life.
Born in 1912, Fazili had opted for premature retirement from government service and devoted his life completely to God.
Ulema and religious heads besides people from all walks of life have expressed grief and sorrow over the demise of the religious scholar.
In his condolence message, Hurriyat chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani described Fazili as a legendary Sufi personality who death was a blow to fraternity of Sufis in the valley.
Minster for Education Naeem Akther said Fazili was a hope for thousands of ailing persons who would visit him for spiritual help.
