Fourteen persons were injured with six of them getting pellet wounds on Friday as forces used pellet guns and resorted to tear gas shelling besides aerial firing to quell the protestors in Khudwani area of Qaimoh Tehsil in Kulgam district.
Eyewitnesses said that massive protests broke out in Khudwani area after Friday prayers against the arrest of youths in the area.
"The protesters blocked the Kulgam-Islamabad road and tried to march towards highway at Wanpoh but were intercepted by police and paramilitary CRPF men," eye witnesses said.
They said that the protesters pelted stones at the forces who retaliated by lobbing tear gas canisters and resorting to aerial firing and shooting pellets.
"Fourteen youths were injured with 6 having pellet wounds in the clashes that continued for several hours," they said.
One of the youth identified as Parvez Ahmad Dar son of Farooq Ahmad sustained critical pellet injuries and was referred to Sub District Hospital (SDH) Qaimoh immediately.
Several other civilians and forces personnel besides policemen who sustained injuries during the clashes were also treated in SDH, Qaimoh. The clashes were on till this report was being filed.
A shutdown was also observed in the area to protest the arrest spree by police and NIA.
Meanwhile, several district level Hurriyat leaders were detained by police on Thursday in Islamabad (Annatnag) district. They included Tehsil president (Islamabad) Hurriyat (G), Aashique Hussain and Democratic Freedom Party (DFP) leader, Engineer Farooq Ahmad Khan.
