This famous picnic spot located at the banks of Nallah Sindh on Sonamarg- Srinagar Road is fast turning into garbage dumping site as labourers and workers of under construction Gagangeer-Sonamarg Z-Morh tunnel have littered it.
This picnic spot stinks as heaps of waste material, polythene bags, PVC bottles and other waste material has been dumped here.
Nallah Sindh which is also one of the main source of drinking water for thousands of people in Srinagar and Ganderbal districts has been polluted by the labourers and workers of under construction Gagangeer-Sonamarag Z.Morh tunnel by throwing disposals and wastes in it.
"The garbage being dumped along the banks of Nallah Sindh in broad day light is causing a huge environment hazard in the area. All this is happening under the very watchful eyes of the Sonamarg Development Authority (SDA) and no action is being taken against violators, including hoteliers,"said Muhammad Yusuf chairman Public Welfare Committee Gund.
"Many times we asked them to stop throwing wastes in Nallah Sindh but they hardly care," said Shabir Ahmad General Secretary Beopar Mandal Sonamarg.
"We approached concerned officers of executive agency (Apco Titan Company) of the tunnel , but nobody paid any heed towards our plea," he added.
"Firstly they have encroached the land secondly they are illegally extracting boulders and sand, thirdly washing of vehicles and now dumping of tons of garbage along the banks of Nallah Sindh are spelling doom for the people," locals said.
Acknowledging the violation, one of the officers of Z-Morh tunnel (Apco Titan Company) said, " Banks of Nallah Sindh will be cleared within 10- days."
When contacted Deputy Commissioner Ganderbal Showkat Ahmad said, "Any kind of environmental violation along the banks of Nallah Sindh will be strictly dealt with."
