Sudden frisking of pedestrians and motorists by the Special Operation Group (SoG) of police on Srinagar-Jammu highway triggered a massive traffic jam from Athwajan to Pantha Chowk in Srinagar on Wednesday.

Eye-witnesses said the SoG started frisking of private vehicles at Athwajan near Pantha Chowk by-pass leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded on the highway for hours.

"This is height. We were supposed to reach home by 7 pm, but we are still stranded at Pantha Chowk," said Imtiyaz Ahmed, a resident of Anantnag (Islamabad).

Witnesseses said hundreds of vehicles were stranded from Batwara to Pantha Chowk due to the frisking exercise.

Station House Officer (SHO) Pantha Chowk, Muhammad Ayoub, however, said it was a routine checking.

When asked whether police had any specific inputs, he said, "Nothing of that sort, checking was a routine affair," he said.
