Lal Chowk and its adjacent areas in Kashmir capital Srinagar remained closed on Thursday to commemorate the 26th death anniversary of victims of Gawkadal massacre on this day in 1990.
The shutdown call has been issued by many separatist groups to remember the victims and express solidarity with the survivors of the massacre.
All the shops and other business establishments are closed in the city centre. However, public transport was plying normally.
At least fifty civilians were killed on January 21, 1990 when CRPF personnel opened fire at a procession heading towards Chotta Bazar area of Karan Nagar.
Several women had been molested by the CRPF men in Chotta Bazar a day earlier during a search operation.
