Two employees of wildlife department have been suspended here for facilitating dumping of illegal timber for smuggling in the wild life zone area of Mamal in Pahalgam area of this South Kashmir district.

The huge logs of timber wood extracted after felling of green gold in the Mamal wildlife protection area was also seized by the wildlife department and a case registered.

"We have placed forest beat in-charge and a forest guard under suspension," said Muhammad Sadiq Mir, Wildlife Warden- Anantnag-Kulgam range.

"We have also seized 91cft timber which was dumped in the protected area meant to be smuggled," said Mir.

Mir said a case under Wildlife Protection Act- 26 has also been registered and inquiry initiated.

Locals said the loot of green gold is rampant in the wildlife sanctuaries in Pahalgam particularly in Mamal, Aru and Ovura areas.

They claimed the department has failed to act against the erring officers involved in facilitating chopping of tress.

"The timber is smuggled to influential hoteliers in Pahalgam," they alleged.
