Tral resents fixing of power meters
This south Kashmir town on Tuesday observed shutdown against the installation of hi-tech power meters.
The shutdown call was given by Traders Federation and Civil Society Tral against the recent installation of hi-tech power meters by Power Development Department (PDD) and all the business establishments remained closed in town with public transport remaining off the roads.
Reports also said that traders and civil society members marched from Bus Stand to Sub-District Magistrate's office at Tral-Bala.
President Traders Federation Tral, Ishfaq Ahmed Kar, termed the PDD move as 'vendetta', saying "We are being victimized by every regime. They always choose Tral for experimentation. It is simply to make people suffer further. Last time, Tral was the first place where power tariff was hiked arbitrarily without looking into the consumption."
Mushtaq Ahmed Shah, MLA Tral, too joined the protestors and uninstalled a hi-tech meter at Tral-Bala.
He said, "Installation of hi-tech meters in Tral is quite unfair. Rather than upgrading infrastructure and minimizing transmission losses, PDD is resorting to victimization of the people."
A meeting has been called on Wednesday among various stakeholders to chalk out the future course of action, a Federation member said.
