In a shocking incident, an employee of the Municipal Council Anantnag on Saturday attempted suicide over issuance of his transfer orders by the department.
Abdul Majeed Sheikh, a linesman and President Employees' Union MCA, hailing from Deva Colony locality of the town, consumed some poisonous substance in the office premises, eye witnesses said.
He was rushed to District Hospital Anantnag and later shifted to SMHS, Srinagar, where his condition is said to be stable.
Sheikh, according to his colleagues was transferred from Anantnag to Qazigund .
"Sheikh went to meet Executive Officer (EO) to plead against his transfer. We don't know what transpired inside but when he came out he consumed poison inside the office premises," employees said.
However, some other employees had a different version of the story.
"Actually he (Sheikh) had gone with a representation on behalf of employees but was told by EO that he is no more part of the office as he had been transferred to Qazigund. He felt humiliated and tried to end his life," they said.
However, Executive Officer (EO), MCA, Nayeem Rizwi while expressing ignorance about the development said: "I did not at all meet him today and I don't have any idea why he attempted suicide." He said the transfer order was routine one which came from the Director's office.
Meanwhile Additional Deputy Development Commissioner (ADDC) Anantnag, Muhammad Younis, has ordered an inquiry into the matter.
