A Block Development officer (BDO) was Friday evening attacked allegedly by village heads inside his office in Kokernag area of this south Kashmir district. Police have taken cognizance of the matter and booked five village heads.

Employees said Panchayat members from different villages of the block barged into the office of BDO, Kokernag, Rashid Raina, on Friday evening and assaulted him. "They, while hurling choicest abuses on him, ransacked the office," they said. "The BDO sustained injuries in the attack."

Raina told Greater Kashmir that some of the Panchayat members were annoyed with him as he did not allow them to meddle with administrative affairs.

"The Panchayat members used to handle the centrally sponsored schemes like MGNREGA on their own and swindled the money meant for public benefit. But, since I took over, I tightened the noose around them and they were feeling frustrated," said Raina.

Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC), Anantnag, Muhamad Younus said: "I have directed the concerned SDM to look into the matter and take appropriate action".

Police, meanwhile, have registered a case under FIR number 16-2016, under sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharge his duties) and 506 (criminal intimidation).
