A 16-year-old boy was found dead in the forests of Machipora in Handwara area of Kupwara district  on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Fayaz Ahmad Mochi s/o Ali Mohammad Mochi of Machipora Rajwar.

Locals said that around 10 AM, the boy had ventured some 2 kilometers deep into the thick forests to collect Shajkun, a wild mushroom on Saturday and a blast was heard in the forest area around 12:30 PM.

Boy didn't return till late into night despite desperate wait by the family members.

Sunday noon, villagers spotted the body of the boy  on a forest ridge.

When contacted, wild life forester Handwara Habibullah Bhat told Greater Kashmir that the boy has died in stray shell explosion as there were burn injuries on his left leg right arm, and face. Leopards and other wild life animals attack the neck of the prey but there were no injury marks on his neck which clearly shows that the boy was not killed in any leopard attack.

SP Handwara Gulam Jeelani Wani told Greater Kshmir that police has evacuated the body from the forests and its postmortem is being conducted.  "We have started investigation".
