The snow has been cleared from the strategic 434 kms Srinagar Leh highway which was closed to traffic movement in December last due to snowfall, slippery conditions and slides in Zojila area.
The high way used to remain closed for more than five months from December to April from Sonamarag to Drass. The authorities used to clear the snow from the highway in May every year. But this year due to less snowfall in the area Border Roads Organisation ( BRO ) and Vijayak have done it two months ahead, thus connecting two ends of the highway, Drass and Sonamarag.
Haji Anayat Ali of Kargil, said that if weather conditions allow, the highway would be thrown open after March 20 this year.
