An elderly Sarpanch from Kalaroos area here was allegedly assaulted by three engineers of SSA wing of Education department on Friday triggering protests and road blockade in this frontier town.
Reports said Abdul Latief Tass son of Jalaludin, the Sarpanch of Moori village of Kalaroos was assaulted by the engineers in the office of CEO Kupwara after some heated argument between Sarpanch and the trio.
"Sarpanch was kicked and punched by the engineers. He lost consciousness and was immediately removed to Sub District Hospital Kupwara," said Tass's relatives.
Block Medical Officer Kupwara, Dr Fareed Shaheen, said Sarpanch aged around 65 years was brought to SDH Kupwara in semi-conscious condition and he was bleeding profusely as he had several wounds on his head and chest. "He was vomiting and feeling acute suffocation. After initial treatment, we have referred him to a Srinagar hospital for specialized treatment," Dr Fareed said.
Soon after the incident, hundreds of Moori residents assembled in front of DC office Kupwara and staged a sit-in protest and blocked Kupwara-Sopore road, demanding immediate arrest of three accused engineers.
The CEO Kupwara, Farooq Ahmad, told Greater Kashmir that there was some argument between the Sarpanch and engineers of SSA's construction wing which resulted in scuffle and injuries to the Sarpanch. "Matter has been referred to police," the CEO added.
Meanwhile, Police have arrested two accused, Balbeer Singh (AEE, SSA wing Kupwara) and Jaffar Ahmad, junior engineer, while another JE, Javid Ahmad is still at large.
Senior Superintendent of Police Kupwara, Ijaz Ahmad Bhat said the accused engineers have been booked u/s 379, 323, 161 of RPC and two of them arrested.
