Government forces on Wednesday evening fired speculative shots during a cordon-and-search operation in Hajin town of north Kashmir's Bandipora district.
Officials said that Army's 33 RR unit launched a search operation in Tengpora village of Naidkhai area of the town at around 5:45 pm after inputs about the presence of militants.
He said that the troopers fired some speculative shots at a suspected spot, adding that there were no reports of any cross-fire.
However, protests erupted in the village with youth taking to streets amid pro-freedom sloganeering.
The protesters, witnesses said, were chased away by the forces personnel.
House-to-house searches were going on in the area when last reports came in.
