The dry weather conditions have facilitated the movement of traffic on strategic 434 kms Srinagar-Leh highway for more days than routine period this year.
The highway which routinely used to close for winter months in ending December every year continues to remain open in January also. However the highway remains closed for night traffic and no vehicle from Sonamarag to Drass is allowed to move after 5pm on the highway.
The highway had reopened on April 30th last year after it was closed for winter months on December 20 in 2015.
Weatherman predicting snowfall this week may lead to the closure of this strategic highway till April 2017, officials said.
Captain N K Singh BRO incharge Zojila area while talking to Greater Kashmir said, " We are doing our best to keep highway open for more time and the efforts would continue till snowfall in the Zojila area."
Riyaz Ahmad DSP traffic Ganderbal said they have submitted a status report about the Zojila area to the higher authorities and Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has to take a final call about the closure of the highway.
The road has turned icy and slippery at many places in the Zojila area and if the weather turns inclement this week then highway would get closed.
