Man dies during sand extraction in Ganderbal

A 25 - year-old man died while another sustained injuries after a portion of the river bank collapsed and fell on them during sand extraction in Fatehpora area of Ganderbal district on Monday morning.

A 25 – year-old man died while  another sustained injuries  after a portion of the river bank collapsed and fell on them during sand extraction in Fatehpora area of Ganderbal district on Monday morning.

A police official said that Irfan Ahmed Malla son of Muhammad Sultan Malla resident of FatehporaGanderbal died while as another person Muzafer Ahmad Malla was injured while they were extracting sand from the nallah.

He was shifted to a hospital where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Police have taken cognizance, said the official.

Meanwhile, the locals including family members and relatives of the victims held a massive protest demonstration here against the irrigation and flood control department and the administration.  The protesters alleged that the I&FC department haphazardly carried out the dredging and leveling work of the nallah due to which it has became prone to mishaps.

" I&FC department didn't carry the work as per the schedule instead used heavy machinery to carry out levelling and dredging work due to which the mishap happened and a human life was lost" the protesters alleged. Talking to Greater Kashmir ADC Ganderbal, Syed ShahnawazBukhari said that they will investigate what people are asking. " We will investigate the matter and if anyone found guilty appropriate action will be taken against him," ADC said.
