The Legislative Assembly (LA) members on Tuesday came down heavily on government for 'ruining' the State Road Transport Corporation (SRTC) and said the corporation has failed to generate revenue despite possessing assets.
The members were speaking on grants for Transport Department in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday.
The members denounced the government for its failure to generate revenue from the Corporation and provide services to the common masses.
MLA Kupwara Bashir Ahmad Dar came down heavily on government for "failing the SRTC."
"Earlier SRTC had fleet of 1600 vehicles which has now reduced to 800 and government is responsible for it," Dar said.
He said the government should windup the Corporation as it has failed to generate revenue over the past years. "SRTC has many assets for revenue generation but it is still running in losses," he said.
He asked the government to amend the Motor Vehicle Act so as to compensate the employees of SRTC under SRO 43 which is not applicable yet for the employees of the Corporation.
National Conference (NC) MLA from Kangan Mian Altaf said there was a dire need for overhauling SRTC which has been ruined over the past years.
"SRTC buses are cheaper but people don't prefer to travel in them. Government must take steps to revamp the Corporation so that common masses will be benefitted with the services," he said and asked the government to replace the old buses with new buses.
"There are no measures from government to regulate route permits of mini buses which ply on routes out of their own will."
