Geelani demands release of political prisoners

The Chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Sunday demanded release of political prisoners detained under Public Safety Act (PSA).

In a statement, Geelani expressed concern over "unabated arrests." "Geelani sahib while referring to Abdul Rashid Wani of Chogal Handwara presently languishing in Central Jail Srinagar, said that being an elderly, operated thrice, suffering from acute lumber pain and  blood pressure, is bed ridden. He said that callous rulers never mind to let him free and because of for their greed of power and their apathetic attitude he continues to be in jail," Hurriyat (G) spokesperson said.

"BJP & PDP led coalition administration surpassed all records and misused PSA against resistance camp. The Delhi groomed rulers obey and follow dictation from their masters in Delhi. This draconian law has been declared dreaded, heartless and unlawful by international community, however state administration is implementing BJP agenda by crushing and curbing, genuine voices and basic rights of the population," Geelani said.

"During last year's people's' uprising, political activists and thousands of people were arrested and more than five hundred were slapped with PSA and shifted outside jail. We are receiving disturbing reports from the jails and detention centers and it is quite horrifying that detainees are manhandled and provided with substandard food. Most of the detained activists are ailing and no proper treatment is provided to them," he said.

Hailing the resolve, determination and resilience of detainees, Geelani said that "those caged include elderly and minors with in age group of 12 and 14. It is highly deplorable that authorities just to appease their masters while slapping PSA against these didn't apply their mind and are following orders with their eyes folded," he said.

"Despite quashing of PSA and bailing out by courts, political activists are being rearrested and most of them are still lodged in different police stations. Quoting Mehbooba Mufti wherein she said that those bailed out by judicial institutions won't be re-arrested, Geelani sahib said 'it proved hoax and ground reality is quite different," Hurriyat spokesperson said.

Ridiculing PDP for their "rhetoric and drum beating" about democracy and release of prisoners, Geelani said "certainly they will face resentment the rulers failed to release all detainees."

Geelani demanded immediate release of political prisoners Shah Wali Muhammad, Sheikh Muhammad Yusuf, Abdul Subhan Wani, Ameer Hamza Shah, Muhammad Yusuf lone, Abdul Ahad Para, Muhammad Shaban Dar, Mir Hafeez Ullah, Muhammad Yousef Falahi, Molana Sarjan Barkati, Muhammad Rafiq Ganai, Muhammad Rustum Bhat, Bashir Ahmad Kashmiri, Raies Ahmad Mir, Showkat Ahmad, Shakeel Ahmad Yatoo, Master Ali Muhammad, Ishfaq Kotwal, Ghulam Muhammad Tantrey, Bashir Ahmad Boya, Mushtaq Ahmad Hura, Muhammad Rafiq Raina, Molvi Abdul Qayoom, Safdar Ahmad Bagwan, Rahmat ullah, Muhammad Yusuf Bhat, Ghulam Muhammad lone, Irshad Ahmad, Bashir Ahmad Sofi, Abdul Khaliq Regu, Shakeel Ahmad Yatoo, Nazir Ahmad Ganai, Nazir Ahmad War, Muhammad Ashraf War, Khursheed Ahmad Dar and several other who are "languishing in different jails under infamous Public Safety Act."
