Three policemen were injured in clashes with youth at Ratnipura here in south Kashmir on Monday.
Witnesses said that tension gripped Ratnipura as the word about presence of the Minister of State (MoS) Zahoor Ahmad Mir spread in the area. Mir had arrived there to condole the demise of the mother of senior PDP leader Showkat Gayoor. "As the minister was returning, youth took to streets and pelted stones at the forces vehicles. Force personnel, who were deployed in strength in the village as a part of security bandobast for the Minister's visit retaliated with teargas shells and baton charge. However, youth didn't relent leading to clashes," witnesses said.
Locals claimed that youth pelted stones at the Minister's cavalcade when he was returning from PDP leader's house. "The escort of the minister resorted to aerial firing to disperse the protesters," locals alleged.
Zahoor Mir denied that his cavalcade was attacked. "I had left from the village when the incident (protests) took place and my guards did not fire," he said.
When contacted SSP Pulwama, Rayees Bhat said, "Youth pelted stones at the security personnel deployed in the village for the ministers visit but the minister had left from the village when the incident happened. Three police men were injured. One of them sustained head injury while two others sustained minor injuries," he said.
