On April 9, Akeel Ahmad Wani (16) of Churmujroo village in Beerwah Budgam went to fetch medicines for his ailing mother, but returned dead. He was among nine civilians shot dead by security forces on polling day in central Kashmir. His cancer affected father seeks exemplary punishment against the personnel responsible for the killing.
Akeel's father, Muhammad Amin, a cancer survivor, said his son went out to get medicine from Beerwah market for his mother when he was shot dead by paramilitary forces personnel. "They murdered him without any provocation," he said adding that he was shot in face, leaving Akeel disfigured.
The family is in possession of a video, where Akil is seen shot by paramilitary forces from a very close distance. The family says that a video has also been shot and circulated by the paramilitary forces.
"He had gone to fetch medicine for his ailing mother. He has nothing to do with the protests," Amin said adding they won't rest till exemplary punishment is not given to paramilitary personnel who killed the boy.
He said Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) was guarding the Polling Station in Churmujroo and they opened fire and shot his son dead. "It was a brutal murder and I hope justice will be served to us," he said.
Akeel was lone son at home taking care of his cancer affected father and ailing mother. His younger brother is studying in New Delhi.
The residents here said that there was no protest and even the children were playing cricket in an orchard adjacent to the Polling Station. "The gunshots created panic in entire area and when we went out, we saw Akeel has died on the spot," Mushtaq Ahmad, a student said. "Everything was normal and firing was shock for us."
Not only Akeel's father, his cousin Gulzar Ahmad Paul said that they have given their statement to the police in which they described his death as "cold blooded murder" by the ITBP. He said that they don't want anything short of a murder case registered against the ITBP personnel.
"We gave statement before police in which we have informed them that Akeel had gone out to get medicines for his mother, but was shot in the head," Paul said adding that the video is the evidence that it was cold blooded murder by ITBP.
