Clashes erupted between students and police in Zainakote area of Srinagar after army men fired in air to disperse students who had blocked traffic on Srinagar-Baramulla highway.

Witnesses said that the students of Government Higher Secondary school Zainakote marched out of the campus and staged a demonstration on the adjacent highway.

Soldiers of an army convoy moving on the highway resorted to aerial firing to disperse the protesting students who had started pelted stones on them, they said.

Later, the students who were shouting pro-freedom slogans clashed with police.

While the students hurled stones on them, the police responded by bursting tear gas shells.

There was no immediate report of any injuries.

Tensions between students and forces have escalated since April 15, when police raided the Degree College in Pulwama, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) south of Srinagar.

Hundreds of students protested and clashes left at least 50 students injured. Authorities didn't say what they were looking for in the raid.

On April 17, another round of student protests across the valley left more than 100 students and an unknown number of police officers injured.

Authorities responded by closing colleges, universities and some high schools for a week, but the protests continued unabated.
