Police detained MLA Langate Sheikh Abdul Rashid when he and his supporters tried to take out a protest march as the civil secretariat reopened here today.
Rashid, along with supporters of his Awami Ittehad Party (AIP), tried to take out the march from Magarmal Bagh towards the civil secretariat but a large contingent of police stopped them near the Exhibition Crossing, a police official said.
"Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh had to face hard hitting slogans near Magharmal Bagh when his cavalcade was surrounded by hundreds of AIP protestors and prevented from entering civil secretariat. Before police could manage safe passage to Dy CM, he had to bear with plebiscite slogans," AIP spokesperson said in a statement.
"However after marching towards secretariat, security forces used force to prevent the march from moving to secretariat. Police arrested dozens including Er. Rasheed, Inam-u-Nabi and Dr. Bari Nayak and lodged them at Shaheed Gunj and Raj Bagh Police stations," the statement said.
Earlier Rasheed said that "New Secretariat has become graveyard of aspirations of majority community and every notorious move by New Delhi is disempowering the majority community."
"Banning 34 TV channels just for the reason that most of them are preaching Islamic teachings is yet another proof that India is heading fast towards becoming a radical fascist state," Rasheed added.
