Violent clashes erupted between youth and government forces after Friday prayers in Anantnag town. The youth were protesting against the Israeli occupation of Jerusalem and Palestine.
Soon after Friday prayers a large number of youth took to streets to protest, pelting stones on the forces deployed in heavy numbers in Reshi bazaar area of the town. The forces in turn lobbed tear-gas canisters and pepper gas to disperse the protestors. The government forces, locals alleged, forced their entry into Jamia Masjid Hanfia and arrested several youth who had taken shelter there. "The people inside the mosque were severely beaten up," said a local wishing not to be named.
The clashes soon spread to other old town areas of Mattan Adda, Kadipora, Dangerpora, Sherbah and even Lal Chowk. The forces fired pellets, but there were no reports of any major injury. A huge pro-freedom protest was also taken out from Jamia Masjid in Shopian. The protesters were shouting pro-Islam, pro azadi, pro Pakistan and pro Palestine slogans. Reports of similar protests were received from Kulgam and Pulwama districts.
