Suspected militants on Thursday snatched the service rifle from a bank security guard in Anantnag district.
A police official said that at least three armed militants overpowered the bank guard and snatched his 12-bore rifle at a J&K Bank branch in Brakpora area, about six kilometers from the Anantnag town.
"The militants had come in the afternoon with an intent to loot cash from the bank, but couldn't succeed," the police official added. Soon after the incident, the government forces cordoned off the area and launched searches to nab the assailants. The incident comes barely 24 hours after the gunmen looted 6 lakh rupees from J&K bank branch in Qaimoh area of Kulgam district.
The bank robbery incidents have witnessed spurt since last year. Police blame militants for the robberies. Last year police claimed to have arrested a non-local, Sandeep Kumar, believed to be working for militants and responsible for many such robberies.
