Advocate Qayoom re-elected as HCBA president 20th time

The High Court Bar Association Srinagar on Thursday re-elected advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom as its president. He was re-elected unopposed.

The results of the polls for the Bar executive body were declared by its election commission chairman AR Kang this evening soon after the counting of votes concluded at Sadder Court Complex at Moominabad here.

In 2017, advocate Qayoom won over advocate NA Ronga by a margin of 222 votes. Qayoom got 464 out of total 722 votes polled while Ronga bagged 242 votes. Sixteen votes were declared rejected.

For the position of vice president, advocate Aijaz Ahmad Bedar won over his rival Mushtaq Ahmad Dar by a margin of 268 votes. Bedar secured 539 while Bhat got 271 votes. Thirteen votes were declared rejected.

In the direct contest between advocate Muhammad Ashraf Bhat and GN Shaheen for the post of general secretary, the former defeated the latter by a margin of 116 votes. Bhat bagged 464 votes while Shaheen secured 348. Fifteen votes were declared rejected.

For the post of joint secretary, Adil Aasmi defeated his rival candidates Ajaz Ahmad Dar and Bilal Ahmad Bhat. Aasmi defeated his close rival Asrar by 78 votes. Aasmi bagged 366 votes, Bilal 288 and Ajaz 162. Fifteen votes were declared rejected.

For the post of treasurer, Bilal Ahmad Wani bagged 348 votes defeating his rivals Sameer Wani and Surat Shakeel Batkoo. Sameer bagged 254 votes while Batkoo got 218 votes. Seven votes were rejected.

Advocate Syed Musaib, a member of HCBA election body said that free and fair elections were held and there was no complaint from any side. "Election was successfully conducted with the cooperation of all the lawyers. Polling stated at 9am to and concluded at 4pm. During the day long polling, 813 members cast their votes," he informed.  

"For the post of president, no candidate had filed nomination papers against advocate Mian Qayoom. Therefore, he succeeded unopposed," he added.

Advocate Syed Musaib informed that date for oath taking ceremony of newly elected office bearers will be announced within next few days.   

Election body comprised of AR King as chairman, Muhammad Rafiq Joo as vice-chairman, Mudasir Gulzar as secretary and Arshad Andrabi, Tariq Jan and Syed Musaib as members.

Elected for first time in 1986 as HCBA president, advocate Qayoom has been re-elected 20 times (including Thursday's re-election), except the time he was jailed or did not contest the elections.
