Tehreek-e-Hurriyat (TeH) chairman Muhammad Ashraf Sehrai has strongly condemned the alleged 'ill- treatment" being meted out to the Kashmiri detainees and under trial prisoners at Kathua Jail in Jammu.
"Family members and relatives of some of the detainees and under trial prisoners lodged at Kathua Jail have brought into our notice that the jail authorities have made the lives of detainees miserable. These detainees are being beaten every day without any rhyme or reason. They are also lodged in small cells and with criminals deliberately. They are also tortured by the criminals and at times by the jail staff as well," Sehrai said in a statement.
He said, "Because of the ill-treatment meted out to them by the jail authorities, these jail inmates are so frightened that they don't want even to narrate their woeful tales due to fear of reprisal by the jail authorities and criminals."
Sehrai appealed to the High Court Bar Association (HCBA), Srinagar, and human rights organisations to take up the matter with International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC), Amnesty International (AI) and Asia Watch (AW) so that they visit the Kathua Jail and see for themselves, as to how the Kashmiri prisoners are being 'maltreated' in this jail, by the jail authorities.
Meanwhile, , Sehrai expressed profound sorrow and pain over the deadly Tsunami in Indonesia that left hundreds dead and property worth billions damaged. "Indonesia urgently needs relief after an earthquake and tsunami. The Muslim Ummah in particular should extend wholehearted help to Indonesian people at this point of time," he added.
Sehrai also condoled the demise of prominent Islamic scholar of Kashmir and Imam of Jamia Masjid, Pulwama, Moulana Alhaj Ali Muhammad. He also condoled the demise of the aunt of Mahaz- e –Azaadi (MeA) Leader Muhammad Yousuf Gilkaar.
