Restore Srinagar city’s drainage system: Arif Laigaroo

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) youth secretary, Arif Laigaroo, Thursday expressed concern over frequent water logging in city and demanded immediate measures to prevent it.

In a statement, Laigaroo said, "Despite tall claims by thegovernment, few hours of rainfall on Thursday morning once again exposed thepoor drainage system in the capital city. The rains caused severe water loggingin the most parts of the city, resulting in inconvenience to the public."

"Most of the roads and by-lanes of the city have been underwater, causing massive traffic jams," he said, adding that it was difficult forthe commuters to walk on several city roads, including the commercial hub LalChowk, Residency Road and MA Road.

"At some busy and important junctions, including RegalChowk, the pedestrians preferred to hire auto-rickshaw to cross the roads. Mostof public transport went off the roads due to water logging," he said, addingthat the problem was compounded by defunct drainage system in various areas. Laigaroo said that there was heavy water loggingat Ghanta Ghar, Magarmal Bagh, Jehangir Chowk, Karan Nagar, Batamaloo and otherparts of the city. He demanded immediate measures to prevent it.
