22 families evacuated to ‘safer places’ in Gund

At least 22 families residing in an avalanche-prone area in Gund were evacuated to safer places following heavy snowfall, officials said on Thursday.

Fresh snowfall also caused damage to two residential houses in Kangan, an official said.

   

He said the roof of a house belonging to Irshad Ahmad Bijran son of Abdul Lateef of Tangpathri, Wangath was damaged due to snowfall and heavy rains last night.

The family members were not present in the house when its roof collapsed, the official said.

In a separate incident, the roof of a residential house owned by Parvaiz Ahmad Shah of Satrina collapsed on Thursday morning.

The family members escaped unhurt in the incident, the official said.

Another official said 22 families from Khan Mohalla, Ramwari in Gund tehsil, were evacuated to safer places due to threat of avalanches in the area.

Sheikh Tahir, sub-divisional police officer Kangan, said 124 members of 22 families were evacuated to government middle school Ramwari Gund and “other safer places”.

Meanwhile, in view of inclement weather conditions and continuous snowfall, sub-divisional magistrate Kangan asked drivers plying on Kangan-Gagangeer, Kangan-Wangth-Narnanag and Kachnambal and Chatergul roads to use anti-skid chains on tyres and prefer using 4×4 vehicles only.
