Bad roads in Handwara pester pedestrians, locals

Residents of Handwara accused the authorities of neglecting the roads in the area subjecting the people to immense difficulties.

All the roads connecting scores of villages through variousroutes with Handwara town are in a shambles, the locals said.

   

They said the roads have developed potholes and deep ditchesall across “with some so wide and deep as to cause damage to the vehiclesrunning over.”

“The tall claims of the authorities on development of theroads fall flat in our village where the people suffer immensely for want ofgood roads,” said Rafiq Ahmad of Zachaldara.

The Handwara-Byepass, Handwara to Magam, Handwara to Mawer,Handwara to Kupwara, Handwara to Kokroosa and Handwara to Sopore roads are inshambles. Besides, the condition of the inner link roads in the town is nodifferent, locals complained.

“We staged protests a number of times against thedilapidated condition of roads but to no avail,” rued Shamem Ahmed, a local.

The locals said that due to the bad roads, the commutersparticularly the school going children and patients are suffering a lot.

“Often when we take the patients to the hospitals, they facelot of difficulties and at times it becomes difficult to take them to thehospitals,” locals said.

Locals appealed to the governor administration to look intothe issue and direct the authorities concerned to immediately repair andupgrade the roads so that the movement of the people is eased.

When contacted Executive Engineer, Roads and BuildingsDepartment, Handwara Division Farooq Ahmad said they were planning to startmacadamization of the roads from 15 May. “Presently the temperatures are low.If they pick up, we will start the work from 15 May,” he added.
