Bandipora traders protest poor power availability

Traders federation Bandipora on Monday staged a protest demonstration in Nowpora against unscheduled and frequent power cuts in Bandipora town for last one week.

The protesters raised slogans against district administration and power development for failing to provide uninterrupted power supply to the area.

“For last one week Bandipora is reeling under darkness as PDD has failed to provide power supply as per scheduled. The department have resorted to unscheduled power cuts, forcing us to come out on roads,” said Shamshad Bhat, president traders federation Bandipora.

The protestors blocked Bandipora-Sopore and Gurez road near Nowpora chowk, thereby hampering traffic movement for hours together.

They said that district administration has failed to commission Putushai Grid Station from past 9 years. “The delay in commissioning of grid station has aggravated power woes in the district. We urge Governor’s administration to expedite work on the completion of grid station so that power woes of the district would be resolved, ” said another protestor.

The protestors said that it is irony that 330 Mega Watt Kishen Ganga Power Project was constricted in Bandipora and last year it was commissioned but the power is being supplied to outside state. “The residents of Bandipora are suffering for want of power supply even as 330 Mega Watt power is supplied to outside state from Bandipora,” they said.

The traders federation Bandipora threatened agitation against the PDD if power was not restored and provided as per the schedule.
