Jammu and Kashmir High Court Bar Association has condemned the alleged ill treatment, beating, torturing and firing on the detenues and undertrial prisoners, lodged at District Jail, Baramulla by the jail authorities and the forces posted within the jail premises.
As per the Bar statement, a delegation of the relatives of the detenues and undertrial prisoners lodged at District Jail Baramulla, informed the Bar Association today, that the Jail Superintendent, who immediately after her joining at Baramulla District Jail, got 9 undertrial prisoners, who are facing trial in several cases in the courts at Srinagar, Sopore and Bandipora, transferred to District Jail Poonch, has now stopped medical facilities to the jail inmates, without any rhyme or reason.
"On their protesting against the said illegal and arbitrary action of the jail superintendent today, the jail inmates were beaten ruthlessly and all their relatives and family members who had come to meet them from different parts of Kashmir province, were returned back and were not allowed to meet anyone of them and when the inmates insisted and requested the jail authorities to allow them to meet their relatives and family members, they were again beaten and in order to terrorize them further, the jail authorities asked the forces posted in the jail to fire on them."
The Bar Association accused the State Government and those who are responsible to manage jail affairs, have under a well devised plan, directed all the jail authorities all over the State to ill-treat the detenues and undertrial prisoners belonging to Kashmir province and it is only because of the said reason that in every jail of the State, Kashmiri prisoners are being beaten and tortured.
"They are detained in cells and their meeting with their relatives and family members is also made difficult and in most of the cases impossible. They are also not given proper diet and the eatables provided to them are either sub-standard or adulterated. This ill treatment meted out to the Kashmiri prisoners in District Jail, Kuthua and Central Jail Kotebalwal, though already reported by the press, has not however, been taken note of by anyone."
