Contrary to their earlier demand for debate over scrapping of the law that criminalizes sale of beef in J&K, CPI-M legislator M Y Targami and PDF Chairman Hakeem Muhammad Yaseen maintained silence on the issue in the State Assembly on Monday.

The two legislators remained seated silently at their places amid din in the House created by National Conference and Congress over different issues.

Targami had earlier moved a bill seeking the ban on sale of beef and cow slaughter should be revoked. Today, when the Speaker Kavinder Gupta, disallowed an adjournment motion moved by the two members, seeking discussion on the situation that has arisen out of enforcement of the ban on slaughter of bovine, they didn't react.

Instead they silently watched the proceedings which were frequently disrupted by NC, Congress and independent MLA Eng Rashid, forcing the Speaker to suspend the proceedings repeatedly.

The second largest opposition party, Congress too, preferred silence over the beef ban issue though the party raised the issue of rehabilitation of the flood victims.

The party members kept attacking the government for its failure to rehabilitate the people hit by the deluge last year. But they largely maintained silence on beef ban issue.
