BSF to use ‘counter technology’ to trace militants’ satellite phone calls

Inspector General of Border Security Force, Kashmir Frontier, Ajmal Singh on Monday said that security forces would use ‘counter technology’ to trace satellite phone calls by militants.

Talking to reporters onsidelines of a function here, the IG BSF said that use of satellite phones bymilitants in Kashmir was nothing new. “The militants were using satellitephones earlier as well. We have an edge over them as we are quite ahead of themin technology. We will use counter technology to trace calls and conversationsof militants who use satellite phones,” Singh said.

Officials recently claimed that during a cordon and searchoperation at Soura in Srinagar, security forces had traced signal of asatellite phone. However, its exact location could not be traced.

In September, securityforces had recovered a satellite phone from an encounter site in Ganderbal. Twomore satellite phones were recovered in north Kashmir in October.

The IG BSF said that infiltration and Cease Fire Violations(CFVs) should not be linked together. “Infiltration was happening beforeabrogation of Article 370 and it continues to happen now as well. Same is thecase with CFV. There is always an attempt to push militants into this side. TheCFV is just an excuse to give cover to militants to enter into this side,”Singh said.

He said that BSF men were alert on the IB and allinfiltration bids by militants under the CFV cover were being foiled.

The IG BSF said that exact number of militants ready toinfiltrate into this side was not available but was quick to add that “largenumber of militants are present on the launching pads on the other side (ofLoC) to sneak into this side.”

“The militants aretrying to get in before the snowfall blocks all passes on the Line of Control,”the IG said.

Singh said that Kashmir situation was peaceful as encountershave gone down and law and order has shown significant improvement.

The IG BSF flagged-off 82children of different schools from remote areas of Kashmir for Bharat Darshan.”We get special budgetary allocation for organising Bharat Darshan tours. Thesechildren live in remote areas of Kashmir and get less opportunity to explorevarious States across the country. We are taking them to cities where there aretop institutes of Science and Technology,” he said.
