Cattle-rearers in Bandipora left dismayed after FMD oubreak

Cattle-rearers in Sonawari belt of Bandipora district have been left dismayed after the outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) among animal population in the area, while no measures have been put in place by the authorities to curb the spread of disease.

Cattle-rearers from Hajin, Shahgund, Vijpora, Gundjehangir, Markundal, Baharabad, Madvan, Hakbara, Banyari, Sumbal, Asham, Naidkhai villages of the district said though they had appealed authorities about the outbreak of FMD in their area two months ago, but no action has been taken till now which is killing animals with each passing day.

   

An insider of Animal Husbandry Department said that the department lacks adequate medicines and staff for treatment of animals. “A lone veterinarian has been deployed to treat animals of one village. Is it possible that lone veterinarian will treat all the animals in one village single handedly?” he said.

Chief Animal Husbandry Officer Bandipora Dr. Peerzada Mushtaq said they have deployed special teams in the district to treat animals.

“The people should contact us. We will definitely reach to them,” said Mushtaq.
