Civilian beaten in Shopian village, admitted in SMHS

On late Wednesday evening, Mohammad Ishaq Lone received a call from army personnel of 34 RR stationed at Nagisharan Shopian, summoning him to the camp. Next day as Lone, a resident of Rawalpora who runs a small pharmacy in Shopian town, visited the camp along with the village head, he was reportedly beaten to pulp by the army men.

“After abusing me, they took off my clothes and beat me with canes,” Lone told Greater Kashmir.

Visibly in severe pain, Lone said that he was told by army men to bring his brother Wilayat Ahmad.

“After they let him off in a semi dead condition, he was asked to show up at the army camp again the next day,” said a local, wishing not be named in this report.

On September 8, 2018, Lone’s brother Wilayat Ahmad vanished from his village and ever since his whereabouts are not known. The family  registered a missing report with a local police station but to no avail. Forces, however, suspect that he might have signed up for some militant outfit.

Lone was immediately rushed to district hospital Shopian from where was sent to SMHS Srinagar given the nature of his grave injuries.

Defence spokesperson Rajesh Kalia told Greater Kashmir that he would “ascertain the details of the incident.”
