Police on Friday arrested a Hurriyat leader who was instrumental in organising pro-freedom rallies in south Kashmir.
Witnesses said that Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leader Mir Hafizullah was arrested today while he was leading a pro-freedom rally in Hakura village near Dialgam in Anantnag district.
Mir, who had organized hundreds of rallies during the ongoing uprising, was evading arrest for long.
Police had raided his home several times to arrest him but he would manage to slip away.
In one of such raids, his brother was also arrested.
On Friday afternoon, policemen in civvies arrived at the venue of the rally and fired some shots in air.
Reports said that people participating in the rally took them as militants.
"They (cops) fired teargas shells after they arrested Mir Hafizullah, which triggered clashes," said a witness.
A police official said that Hafizullah was wanted in twenty-five cases.
