CUK observes Intl Women in Mathematics Day

The Department of Mathematics, Central University of Kashmir (CUK) in collaboration with varsity’s Women Empowerment Committee (WEC) celebrated International Women in Mathematics Day at Nowgam Campus here on Tuesday.

The celebrations started with welcome address by the DeanSchool of Physical and Chemical Sciences, Prof. Wali Muhammad Shah. The keynoteaddress was delivered by eminent Mathematician of the state, Prof. M.A Sofi.

   

In his address he highlighted the contribution of women inMathematics.

Prof. Fozia S Qazi, Head Department of MathematicalSciences, IUST and Dr. Roma Wani, Member, National managing body of Indian RedCross Society were the other speakers on the occasion.

Prof. Qazi gave a detailed presentation on the history ofthe journey of women in mathematics. The title of her presentation was “Genderin Mathematics culture”. Dr. Roma Wani spoke on the strength of women inMathematics.

A large number of students from the Department and Jammu andKashmir Institute of Mathematical Sciences participated in the two symposia onthe theme “Journey of women in Mathematics: From Hypatia to Mirzakhani”.

The first symposium was chaired by Dr. Aftab Hussain Shahand the 2nd by Mr. Shabir Ahmad Ahanger, Assistant Professors in the Departmentof Mathematics.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Mehraj udDin Mir congratulated the Department of Mathematics and Women EmpowermentCommittee for organizing the event.

The programme proceedings were conducted by Dr. Lubna WaliShah, Assistant Professor Department of Mathematics.

Vote of thanks was presented by Ghulam Mohammad Soficoordinator, Department of Mathematics.
