Day 2: Shopian shuts to mourn student’s killing

A spontaneous shutdown was observed in Shopian district for the second consecutive day on Saturday to mourn the killing of a student during a shootout in Anantnag on Thursday.

All shops and other business establishments remained shut while traffic was off the roads. No militant or separatist outfit had called for the shutdown. Police said 21-year-old ShakeebShabir was killed when militants travelling in a car opened fire on the forces. “The fire missed the target and hit Shakeeb who was also travelling in a taxi,” said a police official.

Meanwhile clashes erupted in Wathoo village of Shopian district on Saturday after government forces launched a cordon-and-search-operation.

Local youth took to streets and clashed with government forces to disrupt the operation. An official said that CASO was launched after inputs about the presence of militants in the area.
