Expressing concern over the alleged custodial torture of Kathua minor rape and murder case campaigner Talib Hussain, CPI (M) leader and MLA Kulgam Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami on Thursday urged government to ensure his safety in police custody.
In a statement issued here, Tarigami termed the alleged torture on Talib as "unfortunate" and an effort to "hush up" the Kathua case.
"It is unfortunate that such incidents are happening, where a whistleblower is becoming a victim because some unscrupulous elements are hell bent to hush up the original rape case of innocent minor," he said.
Tarigami said Talib is a key witness in "brutal" gang-rape and murder of Kathua minor girl and urged government to ensure his safety.
"…it is duty of the government to protect him," he said.
CPI (M) leader said Talib became a target of police and right wing groups in Jammu ever since he started campaign for justice in Kathua case.
"…in a democratic set up such shameful incidents should not happen and should be condemned by all. Some fringe elements in Jammu who are giving communal color to Kathua rape case," he said.
Tarigami also appealed court to speed up trial in Kathua case.
